A mousy schoolgirl has cast a spell over film audiences to become a superstar, fashion icon and sex symbol. When Emma Watson had her long hair chopped off, it was a rite of passage to mark her change from child star to grown-up movie actor.
It's been a long wait for the woman who has become a multi-millionaire and a darling of the fashionistas. Since she was 16, Emma has been desperate to snip off those trademark girly plaits. And she showed off her sexy pixie crop on the red carpet last week when she wowed 3, Harry Potter fans with her vintage little black dress and towering heels.
Before that, she'd been stuck under strict instructions from studio bosses with the bushy hairstyle she'd had since she won the role of swotty girl wizard Hermione Granger in the blockbuster movies at the age of nine. But, as Harry would say, expelliarmus! And as filming ends and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, the seventh of the eight films, is released this week, Emma is determined to cast off her childhood image to ensure she remains at the top of the A-list long after we say goodbye to Hogwarts.
All the normal things girls do, I couldn't. So when I got the chance to change my appearance, that's what I did. The moment I cut my hair I felt I became a woman. Now I'm ready to start taking risks. But she's taking nothing for granted and is determined to complete her education at prestigious Brown University in the US state of Rhode Island.
Even though she's trying to keep her feet on the ground, she's never been far from the limelight thanks partly to a topless picture scandal and a turbulent love life involving an indie rocker and a Spanish model. First off was boyfriend of two years Jay Barrymore, eight years her senior. He was dumped when Emma relocated to the US and was swiftly replaced by fellow Brown student Rafael Cebrian, an aspiring model.
It was a short-lived relationship with both sides predictably saying they were too busy for romance. Last month Emma denied rumours she was trying to steal Twilight vampire hunk Robert Pattinson from his long-time love and co-star Kristen Stewart. I can't tell you who it was because it wouldn't be fair to any others. Not that student life is all plain sailing since topless photos allegedly of the star were circulated around campus.
They seem to show Emma naked from the waist up but she furiously denies they are real. Emma has seen them and finds them tiresome. People should know better. It seems Emma has her own magic wand to ensure everything she touches turns to gold. As one fashion expert says: She's just a bit, well, normal. And this makes her appealing to the girls who have grown up watching her. It's all a far cry from her days growing up in sleepy Oxfordshire where her acting only extended as far as amateur productions and school plays.
She was spotted thanks to her drama teacher and screen-tested for the part of Hermione, winning the role after eight auditions although author JK Rowling reportedly knew she was "the one" after the first.
And despite the fact that she was named in February as Hollywood's highest paid female star, Emma is keeping herself extremely busy. Then this summer she visited Bangladesh on behalf of ethical clothing chain People Tree. She has also modelled for the Fairtrade company. And she's still got two more years to go at Brown - where she's studying liberal arts - before deciding what she wants to do with the rest of life.
Emma acknowledges she's already rich enough to retire but she's got no plans to fade away. I'm more grown up and confident now. I'm ready to take more risks. Like us on Facebook.
