Oct 26, 5: Kim Cattrall is up there among my 'Favourite People Ever'. She's a brilliant actress. So I am somewhat biased when I say that it was a borderline-genius move on Specsavers part to tap the year-old Sex and the City star as the face of their latest campaign. How do you personally do that? I got some cat-eye glasses with little diamantes on them, and it was my first kind of shopping experience. How does your choice of glasses reflect your own personal style — and how has that changed over the years?

I think a lot of it has to do with getting in touch with who you are. My mum, when she was a young girl, worked in a really important department store in England and she was exposed to a lot of designers - Balenciaga was her favourite. I spent a lot of time when I was younger finding my particular style.

When I was growing up it was very loud and obnoxious, I loved these really bright prints and my accessories really reflected all of that. I loved to wear glasses and hats and gloves, and I always liked to have something a little bit different to anything anyone else had. I found that the hunt for something different was really fun for me. What was it like working with Patricia Field on Sex and the City? For me, one of the most important things as an actress is getting the wardrobe right.

So when I met Pat Field, the process became much more infused with experimentation. Especially with a character like Samantha - It was much more daring, much more on the edge. The outfits, including the glasses, that she picked for me were not something that I, Kim, would ever wear. I found them really over the top and ostentatious - but they were absolutely perfect for Samantha. What style lessons did you learn from working on the show?

That was very fun for me. I feel like the reason Sex and the City is still so relevant and loved is because all those outfits still look so timeless and amazing, 20 years on. Another great thing that Patricia Field taught me was not to be a snob. So fashion can come from anywhere. Samantha wore some pretty incredible accessories over the years — Chanel bandanas, huge earrings, hats!

Yeah, she really is. Especially sunglasses and especially earrings. The earrings were amazing. Well, it was certainly lobe-changing, or maybe lobe-altering — they were so heavy! Sometimes they would actually tape them to my ear because they were so heavy. But I felt it was all for a good cause, because they looked fantastic, they looked fabulous.

Did you keep any key pieces from the Sex and the City costume wardrobe? So I have that actually in my flat in New York.
